TAMPA, Fla. — The trial of a former University of Tampa student accused in the death of her newborn daughter will not start next month as planned, after a Hillsborough County judge agreed Thursday to push the case back again.

Brianna Moore had been scheduled to go before a jury on Nov. 6. Witnesses and expert witnesses for both the prosecution and the defense told the court they had other commitments that week, and the judge granted the delay. The court did not pick a replacement date on Thursday. Lawyers will return Dec. 3 for a disposition hearing, and the judge is expected to settle on a new trial date at that session.

The postponement followed an earlier court appearance at which Moore’s lawyer told the judge the defense expert needed more time to finish reviewing the case, according to the local State Attorney’s Office. At that hearing the judge scheduled Thursday’s session to revisit the calendar.

The accusations stem from April 2024, when campus security called Tampa police about a 19-year-old woman who might be having a miscarriage after students reported hearing a baby cry inside a dormitory room.

Roommates later spotted blood in the room and, the next day, a bloodstained towel in Moore’s trash can, and they alerted campus police. Officers found a baby girl wrapped in a towel who had died. An autopsy found the infant had several broken ribs and bleeding in her lungs, and the medical examiner classified the death as a homicide.

She has been out of jail since July 16 of this year as she waits for the case to reach a jury.
