TAMPA, Fla. — Tampa police have put more officers on the street for Halloween weekend, with extra attention on drunken driving and on crowded nightlife spots such as Ybor City.

The Tampa Police Department DUI Unit started its stepped-up enforcement overnight heading into Friday, plus a sting aimed at underage drinking downtown. That sweep ended with 14 people sent to an arrest diversion program instead of jail. The department said the point is to head off dangerous situations before they grow, not simply to punish people.

Starting Friday night, Oct. 30, the added patrols widened to neighborhoods and entertainment districts across the city. Officers are working both in uniform and in plain clothes, with a focus on impaired drivers and reckless behavior.

Acting Police Chief Brett Owen urged people to think about consequences while celebrating, warning that even underage drinking can spiral into legal trouble or someone getting hurt. He said planning covers both trick-or-treating in neighborhoods and larger crowds at parties and bars.

The weekend also comes three years after the Oct. 29, 2023, shooting on Seventh Avenue in Ybor City that killed two people and wounded 16. Some Ybor businesses say they are adding their own security staff for the holiday.

For families, police advise trick-or-treaters to travel in groups with flashlights, cross at marked crossings and wear costumes with reflective material and masks that do not block vision. Young children should have an adult along, and parents should check candy before it is eaten. Homeowners are asked to clear tripping hazards and keep pets secured.

Anyone who spots something suspicious should tell police quickly, dialing 911 for emergencies or flagging down an officer, and using 813-231-6130 for matters that are not urgent.
