USF Celebrates Topping Out Ceremony for New Nursing Facility

Ceremonial beam signing at USF nursing facility construction

News Summary

The University of South Florida (USF) recently held a Topping Out Ceremony for its new USF Health College of Nursing facility. This important event marked the placement of the final steel beam, part of a $33 million investment to increase nursing education capacity amidst a statewide nursing shortage. With a projected opening in fall 2026, the facility will enhance training through advanced clinical spaces and a simulation center, aiming to increase enrollment and support healthcare needs in Florida.

Tampa, Florida – The University of South Florida (USF) held a Topping Out Ceremony on April 17, marking a significant milestone in the construction of a new facility for the USF Health College of Nursing. This event celebrated the placement of the final steel beam of the new building, which aims to address the pressing nursing shortage currently facing Florida.

The ceremony was attended by USF leaders, lawmakers, and various community partners, all of whom participated by signing the beam before it was hoisted into place. The new facility is part of a substantial $33 million investment intended to enhance nursing education in the state, which is critical given the ongoing demand for qualified nursing professionals.

Upon its completion, the facility is scheduled to open in fall 2026 and will cover approximately 34,000 square feet. This state-of-the-art building will include advanced clinical spaces and simulation labs, as well as flexible learning environments that are designed to facilitate a modern educational experience. A key component of this project is the establishment of the Tampa General Hospital Nursing Simulation Center, supported by a $4.4 million contribution from Tampa General Hospital in 2023. This center will provide hands-on training through an immersive environment, featuring 12 clinical exam rooms, six debriefing classrooms, and six control rooms.

By the year 2028, the new facility will enable USF to increase enrollment in its undergraduate nursing program by 500 students, which is essential for alleviating the nursing shortages across the state. Florida is facing an urgent need for nurses, and USF graduates more nursing professionals than any other institution in the state. The addition of this facility is expected to further enhance the university’s ability to supply qualified graduates to the healthcare field.

Funding for the expansion project stems from a strategic investment made by the state government in 2022, spearheaded by Governor Ron DeSantis and supported by former Senate President Wilton Simpson. Simpson acknowledged the critical role that USF plays in producing highly qualified nursing graduates who are prepared to meet the healthcare demands of Florida’s population.

Dr. Charles J. Lockwood, who serves as the executive vice president of USF Health, has reiterated the university’s commitment to expanding its nursing program in response to the state’s growing healthcare needs. The new facility is poised to strengthen USF’s collaborations with local and regional healthcare systems, enhancing the transition from education to employment for nursing students.

Known for the state’s top-ranked Master of Science in Nursing program, USF is on a mission to not only produce more graduates but also improve the quality of nursing education. The expansion of the USF Health College of Nursing facility is expected to play a pivotal role in addressing the current nursing shortage in Florida, providing a robust pipeline of well-trained nursing professionals ready to enter the workforce.

The completion of this venture promises a significant impact on the nursing landscape in Florida, contributing to better healthcare outcomes for a growing population in need of advanced nursing care.
