St. Petersburg, Florida – St. Petersburg College (SPC) has secured a significant funding boost of $7.2 million through state grants aimed at enhancing workforce development and improving educational infrastructure. Governor Ron DeSantis announced this funding during a press conference held at SPC’s Midtown Center on July 24.
The financial aid comprises $3.2 million from the Florida Job Growth Grant Fund and $4 million from the Workforce Development Capitalization Incentive Grant. The allocation is intended to support the development of a cutting-edge Industry 4.0 Lab at SPC’s Midtown campus, which will serve as a hub for training in advanced manufacturing technologies.
SPC plans to leverage this funding to enhance and expand its short-term training programs focused on Semiconductors, Mechatronics, Automation, and Robotics. These initiatives are designed to meet the increasing demand for skilled manufacturing technicians in the Tampa Bay area and across Florida.
The new Industry 4.0 Lab will provide students with hands-on experience using state-of-the-art training equipment, thereby facilitating learning that is directly relevant to modern manufacturing practices. This initiative is especially significant for students looking to secure lucrative employment opportunities, particularly those who may be unemployed, underemployed, or veterans seeking to enter or transition within the workforce.
In addition to vocational training, the funding will allow SPC to expand its STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) Collegiate High School from the Downtown Center to the Midtown Center. This expansion enables high school students to simultaneously earn an Associate of Science degree in technology, or an engineering technology degree with a focus on semiconductor manufacturing.
SPC’s commitment to enhancing its programs is underscored by its recent designation as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense (CAE-CD), valid until 2029. This recognition highlights the institution’s rigorous offerings in cybersecurity, an area projected to see a 28% increase in job opportunities in the Tampa Bay region from 2022 to 2026.
The college offers over 200 degrees, certificates, and transfer programs, with 1,342 degrees awarded during the recent Spring semester. The new focus areas are a direct response to the skills gap identified by regional industries, which includes partnerships with local businesses such as Jabil and Honeywell.
SPC is dedicated to increasing both accessibility and the quality of education for students, particularly those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. By addressing the skills deficit in the local labor market, the college aims to contribute to Florida’s economic growth and resilience, ensuring that more individuals can attain sustainable livelihoods through education and training.
Through this substantial grant, St. Petersburg College is poised to make significant strides in preparing a highly skilled workforce, fostering economic development, and providing educational pathways that lead to high-wage job opportunities in a rapidly evolving job market.
