Tampa, FL – Jobsite Theater is set to debut its latest production, PUFFS: Or, Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic & Magic, on Friday, August 3. This unauthorized parody of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter franchise will be performed at the Jaeb Theatre within Tampa’s Straz Center.

Written by Matt Cox, PUFFS explores the comedic journey of the Puffs, the least prestigious house at a fictional magic school. The production creatively navigates through various humorous scenarios typically overlooked in the Harry Potter series, focusing on what it feels like to be an underachiever in a magical setting. Unlike the source material, this play does not use any official terms such as Hogwarts, Muggles, or Quidditch, which adds a unique twist to the narrative.

The main character, often referred to as “Ron,” is humorously represented by a colored mop on a stick, while “Hermione” is depicted with an oversized, lumpy ginger wig. The play is characterized by its rapid-fire jokes and comedic tone, with countless movie references sprinkled throughout to entertain a wide range of audience members, both fans and newcomers alike.

The cast will feature a total of 11 performers, including notable actors Cameron Kubly, Noa Freedman, Troy Brooks, Logan Franke, Rachel Gallagher, and Katherine Yacko. Matthew McGee plays the role of the narrator for most of the performance, guiding the audience through the whimsical tale.

PUFFS will have a preview performance on Thursday prior to its official opening night. Regular performances will continue through the month, promising to deliver a night of laughter and light-hearted entertainment for all attendees.

In addition to PUFFS, the weekend will feature other local theatre performances such as Erica Sutherlin’s Parallel Lives, which is a staged reading that focuses on community narratives and will also take place this weekend at The Studio@620. Various cabaret shows and theater productions will be showcased across several venues, including Powerstories Theatre and The Studio@620.

The vibrant weekend in Tampa extends beyond theater productions. Several live music events are lined up, including Beats on the Pier, which celebrates the anniversary of St. Pete Pier with performances from various artists. This is complemented by musical acts featuring Allyson Briggs at the Palladium, Ghost, a Nordic metal band, at the Amalie Arena, and The Offspring set to perform at the Mid Florida Credit Union on Saturday. Lastly, the legendary Gladys Knight will grace the stage on Sunday at the Seminole Hard Rock Event Center.

As the curtain rises for PUFFS on August 3 at the Jaeb Theatre, the Tampa community can look forward to a weekend filled with laughter, music, and social engagement, while showcasing the local arts scene’s rich diversity.
