Brandon Celebrates 1.5 Million Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches for the Hungry
Brandon, FL – Nativity Catholic Church has reached a major milestone by producing 1.5 million peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the hungry in nearly two decades. This community effort began in 2005 and has involved the collective work of dedicated volunteers who have devoted over 50,000 hours to assemble the sandwiches.
The statistics surrounding this initiative highlight its scale: more than 150,000 loaves of bread and 11,719 gallons of peanut butter have been used since its inception. The effort serves to feed the homeless, hungry, and displaced individuals throughout the community, addressing the pressing issue of food insecurity.
Origins of the Initiative
The project was inspired by Luann Leahy, who approached Nativity officials with the idea nearly 20 years ago. Having previously volunteered at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Seffner, Leahy sought to create a similar initiative in Brandon. With the support of Rev. Arthur J. Proulx, who helped facilitate connections with volunteers, the project was approved and began its journey.
Patricia LeJeune, who managed the Nativity Catholic Church Food Bank and Pantry, played a crucial role in assisting the sandwich-making initiative. Her support included organizing the procurement of essential supplies such as peanut butter, jelly, bread, and sandwich bags.
The Path to 1.5 Million Sandwiches
The sandwich-making effort kicked off in November 2005 with just five volunteers and 30 loaves of bread. Over the years, the program has significantly grown, fostering community engagement and collaboration. Luann Leahy’s commitment as the driving force of the initiative has been unwavering, as she continues to lead the team alongside dedicated volunteers like Jim Courtney and his wife, Joan, who have been involved since the beginning.
In addition to sandwiches, the ministry also distributes clothing, blankets, school supplies, and holiday bags, highlighting their dedication to addressing various needs within the community. The endeavor has formed partnerships with 15 nonprofit organizations, including local churches and food initiatives, to expand its reach and effectiveness.
Ongoing Volunteer Opportunities
Monthly sandwich-making events take place at Nativity Catholic Church, with specific Fridays designated for the assembly of sandwiches. The upcoming sandwich-making dates are set for September 19, October 3, October 17, October 31, November 14, and December 5 and 19. The December events will also include a Christmas giveaway for those in need.
