Brandon, FL – Over the past year, the community initiative Preserving Brandon has transformed from a small grassroots effort into a vibrant movement dedicated to local history and heritage. The initiative aims to reconnect with Brandon’s often-overlooked past and serves as a welcoming space for individuals of all ages who are interested in preserving local history.
Preserving Brandon organizes bimonthly meetings at the Brandon Junior Woman’s Club, located at 129 N. Moon Avenue. These meetings are held on the fourth Sunday of each month at 2 p.m. They have become a cornerstone of the organization, providing vital opportunities for community members to share stories and glean knowledge from guest speakers, including local historians and longtime residents.
In a significant collaboration, Preserving Brandon joined forces with the Limona Cemetery Association in September. This partnership culminated in a meeting centered on local history and the unveiling of a new gate for the Limona Cemetery. The collaboration began when Mike Crouch, secretary of the cemetery association, sought assistance from Preserving Brandon regarding the history of Limona, specifically after a sign was destroyed by an impaired driver.
The Limona Cemetery, established in 1876, originated when Judge Joseph Gillette Knapp filed for a homestead of 160 acres that encompassed the cemetery’s location. The existence of the cemetery was integral to the founding of the town of Limona itself. In 1891, the Limona Cemetery Association was formed to manage and preserve the cemetery, ensuring its status as a community asset.
In 1982, the Limona Cemetery Association entered into a Perpetual Care Trust Agreement with the Limona Village Chapel United Methodist Church, which aims to guarantee the cemetery’s ongoing preservation. The cemetery is notable for being the final resting place of Judge Knapp and his family, as well as the Moseley family and other significant historical figures whose names are reflected in the streets of the area.
Looking ahead, the Limona Cemetery and its surrounding community will celebrate 150 years of existence on January 12, 2026. Plans for this milestone celebration include a collaborative effort between the Limona Cemetery Association, Preserving Brandon, and the Timberly Trust, further underscoring the importance of community engagement in local history.
The Limona Cemetery functions as a community cemetery, welcoming individuals beyond church members and has plans to remain active in the foreseeable future. Community members interested in learning more about Preserving Brandon or attending upcoming meetings can reach out to President Karen McGinnis via email at [email protected].
This ongoing initiative provides a platform for Brandon residents to embrace and celebrate their local history, fostering a greater appreciation for the town’s past and its place in the community’s collective memory.
