TAMPA, Fla. — A 38-year-old man is jailed on an attempted murder charge after a knife attack at a home on North Central Avenue in north Tampa, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputies were called to the house on Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 20, and found a man bleeding from several stab wounds. Medics took him to a hospital, where he arrived in critical condition; sheriff’s officials say he is still in serious shape.
Detectives pulled security camera video from the neighborhood. Investigators say it shows the suspect, Yoandry Hernandez Penton, struggling with the victim, pulling him out of the house and then stabbing him repeatedly. On the recording, the injured man can be heard begging his attacker to release him.
After the assault, detectives said, Hernandez Penton climbed into the victim’s vehicle and raced off. Deputies later located the vehicle left behind on North Hubert Avenue, and additional camera video showed the suspect getting out and walking off on foot.
Detectives obtained a warrant and caught up with him Wednesday along West Hillsborough Avenue. The most serious count, attempted first-degree murder, carries a weapon enhancement. He is also charged on allegations that he stole the vehicle, a grand theft count, and had cocaine on him when he was booked.
Sheriff Chad Chronister described the assault as brutal and relentless, saying it left the victim with injuries that could have killed him. The sheriff’s office has not released the victim’s name or said whether the two men knew each other, and it has not described what led up to the fight inside the home.
