Gators Grab Second Place at Lake Oconee Invitational

This past weekend, the Florida women’s golf team took center stage at the exciting Lake Oconee Invitational. The six-member squad played with heart and determination, ending the tournament in second place with a total score of +26. They finished just six strokes behind the champions from Western Kentucky, who took home first place with a remarkable score of +20.

All Hands on Deck

One of the highlights of the tournament was the incredible teamwork displayed by the Gators. With each golfer finishing within the top 20, it’s clear that their depth and talent truly shone. The star of the weekend was sophomore Inès Archer, who secured an impressive fifth place with a score of +5. This marks her second top-five finish this spring, adding excitement to her already burgeoning career.

The Gators initially set the pace for victory, proudly holding the lead after two rounds of play. Their best performance was seen in the third round, where they shot an admirable 295 (+7). However, the dynamic duo from Western Kentucky pulled off a spectacular final round, finishing at 1-under-par. This historic performance was the only under-par round recorded during the tournament, allowing them to leapfrog the Gators for the title.

Tracking the Rounds

On the first day of competition, the Gators opened strong, shooting 299 (+11), which placed them two strokes ahead of Mercer, who closed the day at +13. Freshman Jessica Guiser led the team on day one, turning in a solid round at 3-over-par. The second round saw even more fierce competition, as Florida improved their score to 296 (+8). Although still two strokes ahead, the pressure from the other teams was palpable.

Sophomore Paula Francisco found her rhythm during round two, matching her best performance of the event with a solid 1-over-par, thanks in part to five impressive birdies. Meanwhile, Archer faced a challenge, finishing the second round at 4-over-par, which caused her to slip from tied for fifth to eighth place. Nonetheless, freshman Siuue Wu made a remarkable comeback, firing 1-over-par in the second round after struggling in the first round at 7-over-par.

The final round proved to be a showcase of talent. Archer demonstrated her skills, shooting an impressive 1-under-par to become the only Gator to finish the day under par. Wu captured attention by nailing an eagle on the demanding eighth hole (a par 5 reaching 471 yards), finishing her round at +1. Florida’s individual competitor, freshman Elaine Widjaja, also turned heads with four birdies, concluding her round even-par.

Looking Ahead

Even though the weekend offered a tough finish, the Gators have enjoyed an outstanding season so far. With seven top-five finishes under their belt and consistently placing in the top five across every stroke play event, their performance speaks for itself.

As they look to the future, the Gators are eager to maintain their momentum with two more regular-season events on the horizon. First up is the Gators Invitational on March 7-9, followed closely by the Chattanooga Invitational from March 28-30. Fans and golf aficionados alike are incredibly excited to see how this talented team continues to develop as they gear up for the thrilling final stretch of the season!
