Hernando, FL Remembers Michael L. “Ski” Ptaszynski

In a heartfelt moment that echoes across the beautiful landscape of Hernando, Florida, the community is mourning the loss of one of its beloved residents, Michael L. “Ski” Ptaszynski. Michael, known affectionately as *Ski*, passed away on Thursday, August 7, 2025, at the age of 83, while receiving care at Tampa General Hospital. His departure leaves a void in the hearts of many who had the pleasure to know him.

A Life Full of Adventure and Service

Born on November 8, 1941, in Baltimore, Maryland, to proud parents Michael and Louise Ptaszynski, Ski was not just an adored family member; he was an adventurer at heart. He served in the United States Air Force from 1960 to 1964, a period that ignited his passion for flying, which he pursued throughout his life. After his military service, Ski dedicated 20 years as a Maryland State Trooper, working tirelessly in various roles including as a road Trooper and later in the Aviation Division. He wrapped up his illustrious career as a Jet Ranger Helicopter pilot, showcasing his commitment to public service.

Family Man and Community Icon

Having moved to Citrus County 26 years ago from Easton, MD, Ski made Hernando his home, quickly becoming a local icon. His deep commitment to family shone brightly through his love for outdoor activities. He instilled a sense of adventure in his children, teaching them to *water ski* and *crab*, sharing not just skills but precious memories that would last a lifetime.

Days spent crabbing alongside his wife, Dottie, creating culinary masterpieces like her famous *crab cakes* and delectable *Pineapple Upside-Down cakes* were mere highlights of his colorful life. As an avid golfer, Ski achieved a remarkable feat with two impressive “Hole in One” accomplishments—first on July 21, 2006, at El Diablo Golf Club and then on August 17, 2012, at Twisted Oaks Golf Club.

Craftsman and Aviation Enthusiast

Ski didn’t just enjoy resources from nature; he also had a knack for building. Whether it was creating *gifts for Dottie* or his exquisite shadow boxes, his craftsmanship was truly special. His love for woodworking was evident when he built their last home in Maryland, skillfully using a variety of beautiful interior woods. Ever the adventurer, he also owned a Cessna airplane, which added a sense of freedom to his travels and adventures, from leisurely lunches in the sky to delightful formation flying with friends.

A Legacy of Love and Family

Sadly, Ski was preceded in death by his brother Bill Ptaszynski and his precious granddaughter Erin Brighton. Yet, he leaves behind a loving family that includes his devoted wife of 50 years, Dorathea “Dottie” Ptaszynski, along with children Orlando Vecchio, Michelle Shumway, Dorothy Gannon, and Toni Buckley. The family tree continues to grow with an impressive lineup of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, ensuring that his legacy will live on through their stories and memories.
