News Summary

A dramatic high-speed chase on Gandy Bridge resulted in a crash and a vehicle fire early Sunday morning. Two men were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The police officer’s pursuit began after spotting a speeding vehicle, leading to the use of a PIT maneuver. The driver faces charges for fleeing law enforcement, sparking discussions on the dangers of high-speed pursuits.

Tampa, Florida – Two men are in the hospital following a high-speed chase and crash that occurred early Sunday morning on the Gandy Bridge. The incident took place around 1 a.m. on May 4, 2025, and involved a dramatic series of events that ended in a vehicle fire.

A Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) trooper spotted a 31-year-old man driving a Toyota Supra at an alarming speed of 93 mph in a posted 55 mph zone. The driver, later identified as Brandon Ramnarine, attempted to flee when the trooper initiated a traffic stop. During the chase, Ramnarine reached speeds exceeding 100 mph while navigating the Gandy Bridge, prompting the trooper to take action.

To bring the speeding vehicle to a stop, the trooper executed a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver at the east end of the bridge. This maneuver caused the Toyota Supra to rotate onto the shoulder of the road. Unfortunately, the vehicle then struck a light pole, leading to a fire that engulfed the car after the collision.

Both Ramnarine and a 32-year-old passenger from Tampa managed to escape the vehicle with non-life-threatening injuries. They were promptly transported to a local hospital for treatment soon after the crash occurred.

The high-speed chase and subsequent crash have resulted in legal consequences for Ramnarine. He has been charged with fleeing and eluding law enforcement at high speed, which is a serious offense under Florida law. The FHP has continued its investigation into the incident, emphasizing the dangers posed by reckless driving and high-speed pursuits.

Incident Details

The chase started when the trooper noticed the speeding vehicle and attempted to intervene. The actions that followed underscored the hazards of high-speed pursuits, not only for those directly involved but also for other road users. The Gandy Bridge, a crucial thoroughfare in the area, experienced temporary disruptions as law enforcement and emergency services responded to the crash.

Impact on Traffic and Whistleblower Initiative

Following the incident, traffic on the Gandy Bridge was affected as emergency services worked to control the situation and clear the wreckage. The FHP utilized this incident as a reminder of the importance of obeying speed limits and the potential consequences of high-speed chases. Officials have reiterated the risks associated with fleeing from law enforcement, not only to those within the vehicle but also to other motorists and pedestrians.

Background Context

High-speed chases are a point of concern for law enforcement across the nation, raising questions about public safety and the appropriateness of pursuing suspects at dangerous speeds. The FHP and other law enforcement agencies regularly train their officers in various techniques, including the PIT maneuver, to safely stop fleeing vehicles while minimizing risk.

In recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on alternative methods of apprehending suspects that prioritize safety, utilizing technology such as tracking devices and aerial surveillance. These developments aim to reduce the dangers associated with high-speed chases, balancing the need for law enforcement to pursue offenders while protecting innocent bystanders on the road.

The Gandy Bridge incident serves as a critical reminder of the consequences of reckless driving and the responsibilities of motorists to adhere to traffic laws. The aftermath of such events prompts discussions on improving safety measures for drivers and law enforcement professionals alike, ensuring that the roads remain safe for the community.
