Riverview, FL – The First Annual Labor Day Legacy Family Picnic will take place on Monday, September 1, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The Barn at Winthrop, located at 11349 Bloomingdale Ave. Proceeds from this event will benefit the preservation efforts at the Julia Moseley Homestead, a historic property built in 1886 and listed on the National Historic Registry.

This community-focused event is organized by the trustees of the Timberley Trust, who are committed to preserving the legacy of the Moseley property and its historical significance. Mark Proctor serves as the President of the Timberley Trust Board of Trustees, alongside trustees Kay Sullivan, Amy Carey Lee, and Betty Jo Tompkins, who serves as the board secretary.

The picnic will feature both indoor and outdoor activities designed to engage families and promote community spirit. Guests can enjoy a delicious menu that includes pulled-pork barbecue dinner and ‘Fresh from Florida’ strawberry shortcakes, which will be supplied by the Florida Strawberry Growers Association from Dover. The event offers an affordable ticket price of $15 for adults, $10 for children aged 15 and under, with free entry for children six and under when accompanied by an adult.

The Timberley Trust has been actively working on the preservation, security, and digitization of the contents of the Julia Moseley property. Mike Proctor noted that despite receiving multiple lucrative offers—totaling millions of dollars—the property was never sold. This decision ensures that the buildings remain in their original location, maintaining the authenticity of the site, whereas many historic buildings across the country have been relocated elsewhere.

As part of the preservation efforts, the property has been made available for film productions under controlled conditions, including the Lifetime movie Just Breathe. This has drawn attention to the historical value and unique features of the homestead, which was home to Julia Moseley until her passing five years ago at the age of 102.

Guests attending the picnic will have opportunities to learn more about Julia Moseley’s life and contributions, highlighting the significance of the homestead and its role in local history. The Moseley family was historically tied to the Elgin Watch Company, which played a significant role in relocating people from Chicago to Brandon to escape the harsh northern winters.

The picnic is not only a chance for community members to enjoy a fun day out with family but also acts as a fundraising platform for further preservation activities. The event has garnered support from local businesses, with the Main Legacy Sponsor being the Odiorne Insurance Agency and Auto Owners Insurance. Additional sponsorship levels, such as Community Champions and Picnic Partners, are available at $1,000 and $500, respectively, ensuring sponsors receive private tours of the Moseley Homestead as part of their contribution.

For those interested in supporting the preservation initiatives of the Julia Moseley Homestead, additional information about sponsorships and activities can be obtained by contacting Betty Jo Tompkins at 813-477-8332. The Labor Day picnic promises to be an enjoyable event while bolstering appreciation for the area’s rich history and cultural heritage.
