AI’s Trillion-Dollar Price Tags Meet a Market That Blinked

AI valuations opinion: AI’s Trillion-Dollar Price Tags Meet a Market That Blinked

A month ago the debate over the two leading AI labs was whether they were worth $1.5 trillion or $2 trillion. This week the debate moved lower. OpenAI closed $11 billion at a $1.25 trillion valuation, below the price it first sought and far short of the $30 billion it once hoped to raise. Anthropic’s would-be IPO buyers are talking about $1.1 trillion to $1.3 trillion, down from $2 trillion in early October.

None of that means the money has dried up. Eleven billion dollars in one close is still an extraordinary check, and Anthropic’s revenue is real. What changed is who sets the price. In a private round, the company and a handful of committed backers negotiate. In an IPO, thousands of portfolio managers who just watched the Nasdaq 100 lose 6.4% in a day get a vote. Private marks are now converging toward what public buyers will pay, and they are converging from above.

The cost of a bad week

SoftBank shows how quickly the pressure spreads. It wrote part of OpenAI’s latest check, then watched its shares fall 11% in Tokyo on Friday as Beijing blocked the China piece of its $5.4 billion ABB robotics purchase. A group built on leverage and big bets on AI now has to rescue a robotics deal with a carve-out while its own stock is sliding. Ambition is still there; room for error is thinner.

Paying up for pipes and tanks

Contrast that with the week’s less glamorous deals. Adani Ports agreed to pay 11.7x EBITDA for Evos, a European tank-storage business with 99% occupancy and inflation-linked take-or-pay contracts, and financed it entirely with bank debt. DTE sold its Vantage projects unit for $2.97 billion to infrastructure funds that want contracted energy cash flows. Energy Transfer sold 30-year bonds without drama. These assets don’t promise to change the world. They promise to pay on schedule, and the market is happy to finance them.

The lesson for dealmakers isn’t that AI is overpriced. The market is separating stories it can underwrite from stories it has to believe. AI labs are moving from the second group toward the first, and that move comes with a discount. Anthropic’s range next week will show how big that discount is.
